Elected

The Crazy, Sordid, Messed-up, Terrible, Absolutely Wonderful Week

Last week was one of the best and worst timespans in respect to publishing ELECTED.  It’s literally been a roller coaster of ups and downs.  There’s so much to explain, but let me start by saying that the story has a happy ending.  A positively, absolutely wonderful pinnacle.

The sordid part of the tale began a few weeks ago when all of the authors at my original publisher, Entranced, received an email that the company was being sold to a new owner.  We were thrown but quickly became energized, listing questions for the new owner and waiting with baited-breath for more information.   He promised to revitalize the company and find new, fresh ways to market the books.  Then a week later, without warning, the publisher’s website came down.  We waited for information.  Nothing.  No one who worked at the publisher had been told anything either.

You know the feeling that starts in the pit of your stomach, growing bigger until it reaches your heart, that you just feel something is wrong?  We waited for a hopeful explanation.  Maybe the website was switching to a new server?  Maybe it was being revamped in cool ways.  But that enlarging pit was worming itself in through the threads of hope, and with each passing day of no communication, everyone knew something was up.

We finally got our answer late Monday with an email that Entranced was closing its doors on publishing.  Not going out of business exactly, just not publishing any books.  You can imagine my devastation (and also partial relief because finally I could move on from the anxiety of being with a publisher that was struggling.)  I had a book launch date, party, blog tour, giveaways, arcs sent out, author quotes for the cover, reviewers, etc. all lined up for ELECTED’s release a month later on April 22nd.  Now everything was lost.  All that promotion work.  All that editing over the last year.  I’d either have to find a new publisher and start completely from scratch with new editors who wanted their own edits made, or I could forget everything and self-publish.

Here is an interesting blog posting with specific info on what may have happened with Entranced Publishing.  I say “may” to be fair because there’s always a million sides to every story.  So who knows…

Then on Tuesday I emailed the authors who’d agreed to endorse ELECTED’s cover with a quote.  They were compassionate and empathetic.  One of them came over with wine that night and a second had an idea…

She was affiliated with a publisher, which I’d heard of before, Silence in the Library.  We talked briefly and a few hours later she and the partners of the publisher called me to talk details.  The hour and a half conversation yielded a deal where I’d keep my original book launch date, earn better royalties, and not only have ebooks made, but also paperback and hardcover print runs!

In a 48 hr period I lost one publisher and gained another.  Whereas everything seemed to be lost on Monday, by Tuesday I had a fantastic publishing deal with Silence in the Library!  http://www.silenceinthelibrarypublishing.com

Then to top off the week, I was a speaker at the Maryland Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators spring conference.  My agent, Sara D’Emic, and I presented on the topics of “Social Media for Authors” and “How to Find an Agent/Query Letters.”  What surprised me was that people actually wanted me to sign things for them.  And two ladies even wanted to take their picture with me.  Whoa…

Here’s a picture of me and my agent giving one of the two talks.

Regarding speaking events, my next author signing will be at AWESOMECON in Washington, DC. on Sat April 19th.  I’ll be talking about working with a small press at 1:15 that day and signing at 4:30pm.

Here is the schedule of when ELECTED books will be released:

April 15th: a KICKSTARTER for the Limited Edition Hardcover copies will begin.  This will be site where people can get advance copies of the hardcover along with other free books and gifts at each of the kickstarter levels.

April 22nd EARTH DAY:  ELECTED will release in ebook form on all major book vendor sites.

April 27th BOOK LAUNCH PARTY:  There will be 200 copies of the book in paperback form for purchase.

June 22nd:  ELECTED will release in paperback form on all major book vendor sites.

Please feel free to comment below on what you think of this sordid/wonderful tale of a week in publishing!  Has something like this ever happened to you or someone you know?  Morale of the story is that social media made me some invaluable connections.  And…never give up.  You never know what’s around the corner!
