DYSTOPIAN TRAINING…and other writing updates

DYSTOPIAN TRAINING…and other writing updates

Hi! It’s been awhile since my last post, so I want to catch you up on all the wild writing news, and tell you about…DYSTOPIAN TRAINING! Many of you know that I moved from Washington, D.C. to Seattle a year ago. It’s been a whirlwind of ups and downs in the last year. I was running a lot in Seattle, since the weather never really gets too cold in winter or too hot in summer. Perfect for running. I ran my first 5K in 8 years as the Seattle rain poured down on me. But then…duh duh duh…in April I broke my foot while carrying my daughter and tripping on a sidewalk at the library. Literally,...

The Elevator Speech

The Elevator Speech

You're in an elevator with the tinkling of soft piano music filling your ears, when low and behold Steven Spielberg walks in at the second floor.  He presses the button for floor 110, same as you.  The two of you are alone for the entire trip, and you see him notice the book (your book) you're clasping in your hot little hands.   When the elevator reaches floor 50, it turns to an express.  You're guaranteed to have an exclusive audience with the famous director for say...the next twenty-five seconds. You're an author.  He's a movie director.  Here's your chance. How do you pare...

You Don’t Know What The Big Events In Your Life Will Be

You Don’t Know What The Big Events In Your Life Will Be

We don't know when what seem to be normal activities in life will end up being game-changers.  It's almost inconceivable how small decisions you make will affect the course of the rest of your entire life. I watched the movie BOYHOOD the other day and was explaining the premise to my husband tonight.  I told him the movie involved watching a boy and his family grow up over a span of twelve years.  What often seemed to be just mundane activities in one part of the movie translated into life changers one or two years later in the storyline.  Some little plot point would often  become a major...

The Cover Reveal of SUSPECTED

The Cover Reveal of SUSPECTED

I'm so excited to finally reveal the cover of SUSPECTED, the second book in The Elected Series! And then let's look at it side-to-side with the first book, ELECTED... Want to know the secrets that SUSPECTED's cover reveals?  First look at the two symbols at the top of the book covers.  Elected's symbol looks like some type of bubble, right?  When Elected released a lot of people asked me why Aloy's face was in a bubble, and what that bubble was.  Well, it's not exactly a bubble.  It's a medallion.  A bauble on a necklace. On Suspected's cover there's a diamond.  You don't get to find...

Women Writing Sci-fi

Women Writing Sci-fi

Oh, the scandal! I've been looking forward to writing this post for a while after I told a neighbor that I wrote a sci-fi novel, and he looked at me like I had three eyes.  He actually said the words..."Seriously, but you're a woman.  How can you write sci-fi?" Now, I know he didn't mean it the way it came out.  He was super-supportive when I told him about Elected.  But his initial reaction showed what he genuinely thought.  He didn't sugar-coat it because he was too caught off-guard. The funny thing is that this is not an out of the ordinary response from men about women writing...

Latest Writing News/Updates

Hi!  I thought it was about time for another update on how ELECTED is doing and to tell you what other writing stuff I'm up to.  And within this post there's an opportunity for teenagers to get a free copy of ELECTED!  Read below to see how. ELECTED is still doing pretty well.  Not making the AMAZON top 100 lists for YA like it did on its release day, but it's still selling.  It's now the first thing that pops up on Amazon when you type in "elected", which is awesome.  The rankings on Amazon fluctuate a lot.  Sometimes it's pretty good at say 50K, and sometimes its bad - like today around...

What Makes a Hero? (ELECTED Book Giveaway!)

What Makes a Hero? (ELECTED Book Giveaway!)

(SEE BOTTOM OF POST FOR EASY WAY TO WIN AN EBOOK OF ELECTED!) Heroes come in all forms.  The nerdy outcast wizard who saves all muggles from he-who-won't-be-named.  A boy bitten by a spider whose guilt over his uncle's death leads him into a world of crime-fighting.  Or even a starving teenage girl who volunteers for the Hunger Games in place of her sister. There's no set stereotype for what a hero looks like or what he/she sacrifices to be given such a label.  The only thing that's common is a unique bravery. That's one of the reasons I love Silence in the Library's latest kickstarter...

And to All My Bloggers…

And to All My Bloggers…

A BIG THANK YOU! Below is the list of the amazing 54 bloggers who posted about ELECTED during its Kickstarter campaign.  As an update, ELECTED's kickstarter ends tonight after a month in the limelight.  Within these four weeks, we not only hit the initial funding goal to print hardcover books (which totally blew my socks off), but we also hit 3 stretch goals.  And...at the time I'm writing this posting, we're only $13 away from hitting the 4th one.  Just 9 more hours to hit that one, and I think we'll do it!  So now all backers will receive ELECTED plus 3-4 free books! These bloggers...
