ELECTED is in the galley phase!

ELECTED is into the galley phase, which means that the publisher has put it in the format required by major distributors.  It now looks like a real book with a table of contents, cool font for the start of each chapter, etc.  I am combing it over, looking for any last, small changes (like commas, words that got smushed together incorrectly in the switch from MS Word to the new galley software, etc.) I'm almost finished editing the galley, and thank goodness I've looked at it.  There were definitely things to catch.  People are very critical of errors in books.  When you're reading and you see an error,...

ELECTED Out of Line Edits

As I've promised, I'm trying to be as transparent as possible about the process of getting ELECTED ready for publication.  That way friends who are reading my blog get to hear the inside scoop, and aspiring authors can hopefully get something out of my experiences.  And since I'm a debut author and everything along the way is new for me, I can tell it to you as I'm learning. Thus, here's the latest on ELECTED:  The last stage of editorial is finished!  The manuscript is now out of developmental and line edits.  It's making it's way through the galley phase this month.  That's where the publisher...

ELECTED Now in Line Edits!

I promised you guys I would give periodic updates about where ELECTED stands in the editing process.  So I'm pleased to report the book is out of developmental edits as of yesterday!  That means the content changes are finished.  It went back and forth for between me, my agent, and my various editors at Entranced.  Now it's been approved to move into line editing, which means a different editor will check the manuscript for spelling, grammar, and punctuation mistakes.  The deadline to finish line edits is January 7th.  And after that it goes to production, including creating a galley and getting...

ADORNED by Georgeann Swiger

ADORNED by Georgeann Swiger

I'm thrilled to help usher in the release of Georgeann Swiger's YA paranormal romance, ADORNED.  Georgeann is a colleague author of mine at Entranced Publishing's Rush imprint.  This is one of those forbidden love stories that I can't seem to get enough of.  I just love a good angst ridden YA! Really pretty cover too! Blurb: When seventeen-year-old Anya finds out she’s actually an angel being trained to protect humanity, she discovers that becoming an angel has nothing to do with wings and haloes. For Anya, becoming an angel has to do with death—her death. Micah, the angelic...

Are Writers Colleages or Competitors?

I love that in the publishing industry, fellow writers are not competitors but colleagues.  Unlike in other industries where people fight for market share, there seems to be a different vibe among individual writers.  Yes, there's competition at the publishing company level, but between the actual authors, there's a sense of community unlike any other I've seen in a professional landscape.  I think that's largely because writers don't feel like they're competing against each other to grab a reader for themselves.  If a reader likes a fellow writer's book, there's no reason why they won't want...

How ELECTED Got Published

Friends, family, and other writers have been asking me how I got ELECTED published (or more correctly, on the road to being published because it won't be released until April 2014).  I thought I'd share the story here, including all the ups and downs--the full rollercoaster of putting a book out there for others to read. I've always liked writing.  My parents read to me like it was a religion.  Not only did we sit on my bed at night to pour through a few books, but I started making up my own stories before I could read or write.  The first "book" I actually wrote myself was about a rainbow,...
