You Don’t Know What The Big Events In Your Life Will Be

You Don’t Know What The Big Events In Your Life Will Be

We don't know when what seem to be normal activities in life will end up being game-changers.  It's almost inconceivable how small decisions you make will affect the course of the rest of your entire life. I watched the movie BOYHOOD the other day and was explaining the premise to my husband tonight.  I told him the movie involved watching a boy and his family grow up over a span of twelve years.  What often seemed to be just mundane activities in one part of the movie translated into life changers one or two years later in the storyline.  Some little plot point would often  become a major...

Go to a Museum: Author Tiffani Angus’ Writing Advice

Liz Colter’s Writing Advice: Titillating Tone

Liz Colter’s Writing Advice: Titillating Tone

Liz Colter is another author from the Athena's Daughters Volume 2 that I get to showcase on my blog.  Here's her writing advice on how to use tone in a story: From her own words... ----------------------------- When I begin a story, I tend to begin with tone. Not always, but usually. In order, the process is most often a feeling for the tone I want, followed by rough impression of the protagonist, then a setting, and a general idea of the beginning and ending. I'm a "pantser" not an outliner, and so at that point I begin writing. The tone guides me through the story - short story...

Writing Advice from Antha Adkins: Critique Feedback Frenzy

Writing Advice from Antha Adkins: Critique Feedback Frenzy

Antha is another sci-fi writer who's with me in the Athena's Daughters Volume 2 anthology.  She wrote the specific story called Hot Flash, which is about..."Beth Webster loved to spend cold days curled up with a good book and a toasty fire.  But when the change ignited a fire inside her, she had to find a way to shed her excess heat." Buy it here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/103879051/athenas-daughters-volume-2?ref=nav_search -------------- Antha's Writing Tip From Her Own Words: I am excited to be joining Rori in the Athena's Daughters 2 Table of Contents. Athena’s Daughters Tour – “Observations on Writing by the Old Crone”

As part of the Athena's Daughters Volume 2 Blog Tour, I have the opportunity today to showcase one of my fellow authors from the book, Tish Eggleston Pahl. In the below message she tells us how she uses every moment, every daily interaction to influence her writing. Her specific story in Athena's Daughters V2 is called Crow Bait and Switch.  Now that I've heard her inspiration/where she got the idea, I can't wait to read the story! Also, just so you know, she picked the title of this blog post!  I am not calling Tish an Old Crone!!!  :) Link to the Athena's Daughters V2 Pre-sale with all the fun pre-sale...

Athena’s Daughters Volume 2: Promoting Women in Sci-fi

Athena’s Daughters Volume 2: Promoting Women in Sci-fi

I blinked once and within the same year that ELECTED came out, I'm involved in a second book that's being published.  This next novel, ATHENA'S DAUGHTERS VOLUME 2, is an anthology of sci-fi short stories, all written by women and with women as the main characters.  The purpose of the book is to promote women in the dominantly male sci-fi genre.  All of the people involved in the book are women - from the writers to the editors to the illustrator. My story in the anthology is called "The Pendant".  It's a prequel to ELECTED, told from Aloy's mom's point of view. Ever want to know if Aloy's...

Wrong. The passengers are rich jerks who treat the crew like garbage, when they aren’t pretending we’re their whores. The best day was when that cokehead heiress Kalina tried to fire me just for doing my job. I swore I’d never go back home to my parents and their crazy fundamentalist ranch in the desert, but nothing could be worse than this. And...

Baltimore Book Festival

Baltimore Book Festival

I have yet to give you a full account of speaking and signing at the Baltimore Book Festival this past September.  I got involved with the event after signing at DC's Awesomecon in April 2014.  So it goes to show that the cons and other book signing events are great for networking. The Baltimore Book Festival was three days long, and as I flew in from Seattle for the event, I only stayed for two days so I could see friends from back home and attend a baby shower the third day I was in town.  At the book festival I did a short reading of Elected, participated in a science fiction fans/authors...
