PERFECTED’s Release Brings Contests & Parties!

This marks the third and final Earth Day release for Aloy, Griffin, and Vienne’s story. As we last left Aloy, she had two choices in front of her: leave East Country behind as Calix’s wife or stay and prepare for battle with Mid Country. She’s navigated through political and environmental intrigue, and Perfected finally reveals the conclusion!   There is no Kickstarter this time around, which means you don’t have to wait to receive the book. Perfected is available today: in ebook (http://tinyurl.com/EbookPerfected) and paperback on Amazon (http://tinyurl.com/PaperbackPerfected) It...

Behind-the-Scenes of The Elected Series

Behind-the-Scenes of The Elected Series

With the third and final book of The Elected Series, Perfected, releasing April 22nd, I thought I'd reveal some background secrets on the making of the novel and answer some frequently asked questions. First, what did it feel like to finish the series?  I wrote the epilogue to Perfected near the beginning of drafting the third book, not in chronological order, as you might have thought.  I've always known how I wanted the series to end, and once I'd written the epilogue, everything else just moved toward that conclusion.  I wrote that scene tearing-up as I typed because it felt so significant....

Books I’ve Devoured in the Last Few Months

Hi all!  Some people have been asking me lately what I'm reading, so I thought I'd give you the latest list of books I've been "devouring".  (Devouring because, as you'll remember, books are like nourishment to me!) Well, believe it or not, I just found Amazon's Audible for the first time during these past few months.  So I've been reading a lot more than usual since I can listen to books while I drive. So here's what's been in my stack of books over the last few months: Currently Reading: 1.  Ready Player One (oh my gosh, this is my favorite read of the year!  Currently reading...

DYSTOPIAN TRAINING…and other writing updates

DYSTOPIAN TRAINING…and other writing updates

Hi! It’s been awhile since my last post, so I want to catch you up on all the wild writing news, and tell you about…DYSTOPIAN TRAINING! Many of you know that I moved from Washington, D.C. to Seattle a year ago. It’s been a whirlwind of ups and downs in the last year. I was running a lot in Seattle, since the weather never really gets too cold in winter or too hot in summer. Perfect for running. I ran my first 5K in 8 years as the Seattle rain poured down on me. But then…duh duh duh…in April I broke my foot while carrying my daughter and tripping on a sidewalk at the library. Literally,...

Publishing Takes a Community (special guest post by Megan O’Russell)

Publishing Takes a Community (special guest post by Megan O’Russell)

The below post is from one of my fellow writers, Megan O'Russell at Silence in the Library Publishing.  She talks about the writing community, which has been a topic of a few of my past blogs posting.  I feel honored that Megan mentioned me in the below!  And the second book, The Siren's Realm, in her YA fantasy series all about magic just released today! ---------------------- Writing can feel like a very solitary venture. I spend much of my time sitting by myself, dreaming up scenes and then pounding them out at my keyboard. I’m an actor by trade, and I’m used to only being able...

The Elevator Speech

The Elevator Speech

You're in an elevator with the tinkling of soft piano music filling your ears, when low and behold Steven Spielberg walks in at the second floor.  He presses the button for floor 110, same as you.  The two of you are alone for the entire trip, and you see him notice the book (your book) you're clasping in your hot little hands.   When the elevator reaches floor 50, it turns to an express.  You're guaranteed to have an exclusive audience with the famous director for say...the next twenty-five seconds. You're an author.  He's a movie director.  Here's your chance. How do you pare...

Writing with Color

Writing with Color

I was inspired to write this particular post about the use of sensation and color after re-reading Janine K. Spendlove's 2nd book in the War of the Seasons series.  The novels are about a human girl who falls into an alternate world full of fairies, elves, sprites, etc.  Each of the seasons: Fall, Spring, Summer, Winter are at war, and each of at the four books focuses on a particular one.  It's like Alice in Wonderland meeting Harry Potter - a festival of creativity and a delight for the senses. I absolutely love the way Janine uses color in her narration.  It causes the pages to seem alive,...
