Author Interviews

Publishing Takes a Community (special guest post by Megan O’Russell)

The below post is from one of my fellow writers, Megan O’Russell at Silence in the Library Publishing.  She talks about the writing community, which has been a topic of a few of my past blogs posting.  I feel honored that Megan mentioned me in the below!  And the second book, The Siren’s Realm, in her YA fantasy series all about magic just released today!

Writing can feel like a very solitary venture. I spend much of my time sitting by myself, dreaming up scenes and then pounding them out at my keyboard.

I’m an actor by trade, and I’m used to only being able to do my job surrounded by people. When I started writing, I was afraid of leaping into a whole new world where I would be without that constant sense of community.

And for a while that’s how it felt. Like I was sending emails out into the void, hoping I would hear something in six-to-eight weeks. But then I was given my first publishing contract by a now defunct publisher. Having my publisher go out of business was heartbreaking, but through working with them, I gained a community of writers. People to chat with about the heartbreak and joys of being an author.

And when publisher one went defunct, the fabulous Rori Shay led me to Silence in the Library Publishing, with whom The Tethering and now book two in the series, The Siren’s Realm, have found a home.

For leading me to Silence in the Library, I will be eternally grateful to Rori. By joining SitL, my writing family grew exponentially.

So, to the writers out there, here is my hard learning advice. There are friends out there in the writing ether. Even if you, like me, can’t get to conferences, there are local writing groups, online groups, even Facebook groups. Find one that works for you, and start making friends. You never know where a Facebook friend might lead you.

And for the non-writers, please know that publishing a book doesn’t happen in a vacuum. So much work by so many people goes into a book before it reaches the readers. Writing you can do on your own. Publishing takes a community.

Blurb from Megan’s new book:  The Siren’s Realm:

Jacob loves Emilia Gray, but things aren’t always that simple in the world of Magickind…

The war has begun.

The Dragons are gaining power, and the Gray Clan stands alone. Desperate to find a way to stop the Pendragon, Emilia is forced to seek answers from someone who hasn’t been seen in seventeen years . . . Her mother. Embarking on a magical journey filled with witches, wizards, centaurs and a dangerous and powerful Siren, Jacob and Emilia must take a leap of faith to a land neither could have ever imagined . . . and hope they can then find their way home.
