How Authors Can Use Social Media for Marketing

I’m new to Twitter, so I was talking about it with a business colleague of mine, Scott Span from Tolero Solutions www.tolerosolutions.com.  He’s a change management practitioner with his own company, and he’s married to a marketing guru, Ron Romanski with his own company, Preactive Marketing http://preactivemarketing.com/.  So two very good sources for info on marketing and using social media.  I asked my friend how I could best use Twitter to start creating a network of authors, publishers, agents, fans (essentially anyone related to the writing world–and aren’t we all?).

He gave me lots of advice, but I wanted to share one particular golden nugget.  He said that a lot of people on twitter make the mistake of just talking about themselves.  Instead, if your goal is to reach out and capture an audience, make the tweets relevant to your audience.  For instance, go beyond just posting a news article.  Post it and then ask your followers what they think of it.  Ask questions in your tweets.  Tweet and message others about something they’ve been tweeting or something you know they’d be interested in.

I’ve also started witnessing an interesting marketing technique on twitter.  Books will have their own twitter page, and they’ll reach out to you first to follow you.  You’ll be interested in who’s just started following you, so these pages will at least get you to look at them once.  Then if you’re hooked, they are happy if you follow them in return…and in so doing see all their marketing material.

I also saw an author run a contest on twitter.  She said she’d critique the first three chapters of three winners’ novels.  She had over 2,000 entries in a matter of days!

What are your social media marketing ideas?
