I’ve been waiting for this day since I first received the cover art samples from Entranced and Suzannah Safi a few months ago. (Ok, I take that back…actually, if I think about it…I’ve been waiting for this day ever since I finished the first draft of ELECTED back in July 2012.
I love this cover because it gives off a mysterious, dark vibe and shows just a glimpse of Aloy’s face. Can you tell if it’s a boy or a girl’s face?
If you read the synopsis of ELECTED on my website, you’ll see that the main character, Aloy, is a girl posing as a boy. Her face has intrinsic girlish features, but if she tries, she can pass as male. I think the face on this cover coveys that perfectly!
For anyone interested in knowing the inner workings of cover art choices, believe me, this wasn’t a cut and dry process. It took multiple iterations with my publisher (Entranced), agent (Sara D’Emic), and cover artist (Suzannah Safi) all trying to nail down exactly what the cover should portray. Each element, like the background, the font, the face…everything was scrutinized. A big thank you to all involved, because they treated me with such grace and kindness. As a debut author who is very enthusiastic, I know I inundated them with my opinions. They went out of the way to make sure I was happy with the cover, creating more than what is probably the normal number of alternate covers. From what I’ve heard, not all publishers allow their authors as much input in the process. For allowing me to have many more cents than just my “2 cents”, thank you again to Entranced Publishing!
Why is the cover reveal so important? For so many reasons. First, because there are two major promotional opportunities when publishing a book – the cover reveal months before the release date and then the actual release date. My publisher/publicist (Suzanne van Rooyen) lines up bloggers and tweeters to announce both events through an online tour. A BIG THANK YOU to all the participants today, proclaiming ELECTED’s debut and showing the cover off online through a myriad of social media outlets. Please feel free to visit these links and check out not only the posting on ELECTED, but these bloggers’ other material on writing and reading. They have some truly interesting articles. If there’s anyone who’s posting ELECTED’s cover reveal that I don’t have listed below, just email me at rorishay (at) gmail (dot) com, and I’ll add their URL to the list!
Second, the other cool thing with today’s cover reveal is the giveaway of an advanced ebook copy of ELECTED. Whoever wins will receive it via whatever electronic means you want before the book is actually released to the public! The rafflecopter link is http://www.rafflecopter.com/rafl/display/fc0c920/. Entry in this contest is really easy (just “like” Rori Shay on facebook, follow me on twitter, or tweet about the giveaway).
Last, this morning I added the cover onto Goodreads (the social media site for reading and books), which was so cool! Seeing it up there made the book seem real. You can add ELECTED to your Goodreads “want to read” pile, if you haven’t already. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18485862-elected?from_search=true Shout out to Denise McRoberts, who already gave ELECTED a 5 star review on Goodreads.
